Small Business Owners Need Work-Life Balance

Work-Life Balance

As the owner of a small business, you have a lot of responsibility. Does that mean you have to give all of your time to your business? If you are spending all day every day either working or thinking about work, you probably need to focus more on finding a work-life balance. You may think that the time you spend working is necessary to make your business a success, but if you overwork yourself, your business will suffer.

There are days when your business requires more attention, and there are days where you have more personal obligations. That’s one of the best things about being your own boss! Don’t overwork yourself. Find a balance between work responsibilities and personal life that works for you.

Make Time for Family

For example, if you are just starting your small business, you are probably spending a lot more time now than you will need to in the future. Just remember to pace yourself! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Once you meet significant milestones, take some time away from work to spend with loved ones.

Set Boundaries

Leave your work at the office, even if that is a home office. Avoid bringing work to bed or to the dinner table. Make sure you only take personal calls at work if they are an emergency, and let your clients and employees know that you will be unavailable when you are home. If you are on vacation or taking a sick day, resist the urge to check your work email or call to check in on the business.

Each week, decide which days you will take off, and stick to that schedule! Imagine that your personal days are just as important as work appointments. Take small breaks during the day as well. Look away from your computer screen and take a walk, or sit down if your job requires you to stand. Put these breaks in your calendar if you have to.

Delegate Tasks

Trust your employees to hold down the fort. Delegating tasks to employees is a big part of maintaining a work-life balance. You cannot do everything on your own. If you do work by yourself, you can delegate small tasks by asking for help from friends or family. The cost is justifiable to give yourself a break and take some responsibility off of your shoulders.

Establish a Support System

Asking for help doesn’t end with your employees. You need a personal support system as well. You will feel overwhelmed at times as a small business owner. It is important that you have someone, or a group of people, that you can turn to at those times. Having this emotional support can make a big difference in the quality of your work.

Take Care of Your Body

You may have had an exercise routine before you opened your business. Even if you cannot follow the same routine, try to stay active. Avoid fast food, even though it may seem convenient after work. Prepare your meals for the week in advance so fast food does not tempt you. This will also save you time and money.

Finding work-life balance as a small business owner will be difficult. Take time for yourself, honor your personal commitments, and create a good support system. If you are still looking for business insurance, try Infinity! Get a free quote online or call us at 1-800-INFINITY.
