Most Commonly Stolen Cars

Auto Theft

Most Commonly Stolen Cars:

Each year, the National Insurance Crime Bureau publishes information about the car models that are most commonly stolen, and these are the top five for 2016:

  1. Toyota Camry: 1,113 thefts

  2. Nissan Altima: 1,063

  3. Toyota Corolla: 982

  4. Dodge Charger: 945

  5. Ford Fusion: 914

With respect to used vehicles, the most stolen model was the 1997 Honda Accord. According to the NICB, this can be attributed to the fact that these cars do not have “smart keys,” a more modern anti-theft system that helps prevent vehicle theft.

Whether you have an older car or the newest model on the market, follow these tips to make sure that your car does not become part of the list above.

Use common sense

It can seem ridiculous, but the first step to preventing a stolen car is to lock it and always keep the key with you. Many car robberies result from something as simple as someone leaving their keys inside their car.

Install an alarm

Most newer-model cars come with an alarm system installed, but if your car is older, you should install a system to make your vehicle more secure.

Keep your car information with you

Always keep important information about your car, like the license plate number and the VIN, with you. You can save it in a note on your phone or write it on a piece of paper that you keep in your purse or wallet. If you do not know where to find the VIN number of your car, you can usually find it under the windshield wiper on the driver’s side.

Install a tracking device

In the case of car theft, it is always useful to have GPS installed, since it could help police find your car more quickly. With one of these systems, the owner of the car will be notified if the location of the car changes, and with that information you can inform the police.

Have your car insurance up-to-date

Having car insurance is important, not just so that you are insured in the case of an accident, but also in the case of a stolen car. Make sure that you have paid on time for your policy so that your coverage never lapses.

You can never be 100 percent protected from a car theft, but it is always better to be prepared and take the necessary steps to prevent a car theft. If you need car insurance or if you are shopping around for the best price, call an Infinity agent at 1-800-INFINITY or get a quote online!
