9 Fun Things to Do With Your Kids This Summer

With kids on summer vacation, many parents look for ways to keep them busy instead of stuck at home, playing video games. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars taking them to a theme park. There are numerous inexpensive or free activities! We’ve compiled 9 fun things to do with your kids this summer:

1. Stop by your local library

Libraries keep more things on their shelves than just books; they have calendars brimming with activities for children and adults. During the hot summer months, you can enjoy an art exhibit, storytelling or puppetry. How about a special Japanese paper theater show known as Kamishibai?

2. Visit a botanical garden

Depending on your kid's age, a botanical garden could provide hours of fun this summer. Having first-hand experience with exotic plants that they might have learned about in school may turn out to be quite exciting. Some botanical gardens offer free kids botany programs and many even have butterfly gardens.

3. Learn about the universe

Why stay on earth when you could travel to other galaxies and planets? If your city has an observatory or planetarium, check their scheduled program. The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles offers exhibitions and films. Admission to the building is free but some shows require reservations and ticket. Universities often open up their observatories to the public for special events like meteor showers.

4. Enjoy a movie at a park

How about enjoying a movie outdoors? Many cities host movie nights in public spaces featuring children's films. This offers a unique opportunity to share a good time with your family this summer. Make it more special by bringing along a blanket and picnic basket full of goodies to enjoy under the stars.

5. Catching the waves

Spending time at the beach is a favorite pastime for many. If you live around the coast, take advantage of the milder temperatures by the shore. Teach your kids how to swim, build sandcastles or just lay back and chill.

6. Have fun at a splash park

If going to the beach is not an option, check to see if your community has any pubic splash parks! Look for one in your area where to take your kids for a fun and cool time! Pack snacks, sunscreen, towels, and water for everyone.

7. Appreciate American history

Going on a road trip? Take advantage of the opportunity to visit sites like the Williamsburg Historic District in Virginia or the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. History is all around us. If you can make it to D.C., all of the world famous national museums are free to the public. Plan ahead and find interesting stops. After all, getting there is half the fun.

8. Participate in a factory tour

Wouldn't it be fun to learn how chocolate, ice cream and jelly beans are made? You bet. Places like Hershey’s Chocolate World in Hershey, Pennsylvania, Blue Bell Creameries, in Brenham, Texas and the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield, California offer free family tours. Your kids will not only learn first-hand how these treats are made but get to taste them after.

9. Appreciate nature on a hike

Another fun thing to do this summer is hiking nature trails at different parks. Usually, there are trails specially designed for the little ones and even pets are often welcome. Get acquainted with their schedules, then pack snacks, sun protection and water.

Whether you stay in town or travel to another city, you can enjoy many activities with your family this summer. Make the most of these long sunny days!
